CBE Statement on Racist Mass Shooting in Buffalo, NY & Violent attack in Laguna Woods, CA

July 7, 2022

It’s a new month, we’ve turned the page on the calendar, but there is no turning the page on the devastation caused by racism and white supremacy. We must act to dismantle them every day, every month of the year. CBE mourns the lives stolen from the families and communities in Buffalo, NY on Saturday May 14, 2022. This terrorist act of white supremacy and anti-Black violence adds even greater urgency to our commitment to bring about change.

For Black Americans, African Americans, and all Black people targeted by racist violence in our country, we must raise our collective voices to name, confront, and disempower the voices of white supremacy. We loudly reject white supremacist ideology, we give no quarter to violence targeting Black Americans, African Americans, and all Black people, and we will never be silent in the face of racism. We remember the names of the victims, all of whom died too soon:

CBE stands united with those working to end oppression and white supremacy. We will continue building cross-racial solidarity with our allies to reimagine and reinvest in long term community-centered solutions. For the families and communities in Buffalo, NY, we offer our support, our grief, and our renewed commitment to dismantling white supremacy and anti-Blackness in all its forms. We also stand in support of the statement by the Movement for Black Lives and take direction from allies like Hip Hop Caucus on how to provide direct support for Buffalo’s Black community whose grocery store this murderous white supremacist terrorized.

The attack on elders at prayer in Laguna Woods, CA on Sunday May 15, 2022 marks yet another tragedy in the unthinkably long list of killings targeting individuals based on their race, ethnicity, and place of worship. Violence that is racially, politically, or religiously motivated only highlights the importance of broader community-centered solutions. CBE mourns the death of Dr. John Cheng, who, together with several Taiwanese elders, heroically subdued the shooter and saved many lives. We grieve in solidarity and send our sincere condolences to the Laguna Woods and Taiwanese-American communities.
